Thanks to Walkinside it is possible to offer a much easier way to view models. Now in actual practice the engineer has to search for a person who can navigate in the model ; when the "use" threshold would be lower, many more persons should be able to use the Enterprise Navigator. A big advantage of Walkinside is the possibility to navigate very quickly in the model ; the "navigate training" is negligible.

For someone who is not specialized in 3D models, it is not easy to evaluate this type of design. The visualization programs that are intended to provide assistance are often highly technical and require intensive training. But with Walkinside, the user can easily walk around the model ; examine the plants in real conditions. In other words, the tool reduces the gap between the CAD and the non-CAD professionals. In the future, we will also be able to use the 3D models for other purposes."

We have chosen Walkinside because it is the only way to view such complex building like a cruise vessel or a private Yacht. Also the special effects like material assignments, the possibility to animate water and fire make the 3D-model much more realistic. We get a model which will view all technical information and on the other hand we get a real-time rendering presentation from the same model. Furthermore it is possible to measure distance, make redlining, or get database information. The benefit in using the Walkinside Viewer is to get a fast and interactive presentation for the exterior and interior styling and the viewing of technical rooms like engine- room, gearbox, aircushion etc. First we use the presentation for the client. It is much easier to locate problems on a 3D-view than on a 2D-view technical drawing. Also the client gets a better feeling of the size and arrangement of the rooms. The client has the possibility to make an interactive walkthrough of his ship by his own. He can view in each corner of the construction. He can measure and write remarks to details of the 3D-model. A second reason is the possibility to locate and to discuss problems on the3D-model in-house, with consortia-partners, designers, architects or the client via internet connection. The viewer will fit our expectation in all details. The technical support is excellent and fast. If we have any special wishes, we get the changes in a short time and it works.

Multi-Million dollar CAD models

The Oil & Gas business is a heavy user of CAD models to define their surface concepts that extract and produce hydrocarbons. These surface concepts range from fixed platforms, floating platforms and equipment that is placed on the sea floor.

The multi-million dollar CAD models are generated throughout the design phase and are then used to build the facilities. Each pipe, nut, structure, sub-structure, electrical and instrumentation pipe rack is designed by various drawing offices and then brought together into one model and visualized. In the last few years many of these models are produced in 3D, so that interference or 'clash' checks of the designs can be made. "Intelligence" is applied to the model to check if components hit each other or if ergonomic concerns are addressed.

The models are invariably produced and manipulated by the drafting department on the inputs provided by the engineer. Very rarely does the engineer himself get to handle or alter the model in real time to see what the effects of his design have on the final product.

Choose the right software.

The Belgian company, VRcontext s.a. with their flagship software Walkinside could change all this. The Walkinside product takes multiple CAD formats and converts and produces a 3D visualization of the model. The product uses proprietary technology of 'collision detection' and 'gravity' to enhance the visualization so the user may interact with model as one may do in real life. Opening valves, moving objects, climbing stairs are now all possible within the 3D model.

A recent example of the use of Walkinside has been the Visualization of the Nigerian Bonga Field Development for Shell Deepwater Services, based in Houston using its CAD produced drawings to connect various parts of the development together into an exciting, interactive 3D Visualisation of the whole development.

The Visualization was constructed by taking the CAD files from the Contractors responsible for building the facilities. Each Contractor had its own preferred in-house CAD package, ranging from PDMS, MicroStation, AutoCad to ProE. All files were used with no manipulation or editing to its content, imported in MicroStation and passed through the Walkinside Converter. As can be appreciated, files sizes were considerable (2.5 Gb). The 'engine' of Walkinside then outputted a 3D VR model, with which one could navigate through using the standard keyboard and mouse.

The resulting VR model is one of the largest ever made in the world, covering more than 100 square kilometers and containing more than 100 million triangles. It is also possible to load dynamically additional VR models.

"Walkinside is a unique tool that allows us to explore architectural solutions with our clients in a real time 3D environment. The main benefits are for both the architect and the client, as an integral tool in the design process."

1.Why did you choose Walkinside for ?
For its ease of use in model conversion, desktop CAD review and as a cost effective alternative to other high end CAD review software.

2.What is the benefit in using it ?
Same as above.

3.Does it fit your expectations ?
For ease of use yes, looking forward to the color and texture mapping and ability to use it immersively .

The benefit to use Walkinside in KOPEC

Walkinside lets us review 3D models through the eyes of a virtual human character, so we can check an interval between installations like equipment, wall, piping in comparison with an approach of virtual human character. We can control whether it passes through obstacles or not and it's easy to use.
